Gesture and Matter: Málaga at the Forefront of International Abstraction

Pompidou Gesture and Matter

Málaga continues to solidify its reputation as a premier cultural capital. As the spring sun bathes Muelle Uno, the Centre Pompidou Málaga invites us to dive into a mould-breaking artistic experience. From 13 May to 7 September 2026, the exhibition "Gesture and Matter" arrives under the Cube to show us how art decided to start from scratch following the trauma of the Second World War. An unmissable event for those who appreciate raw beauty and creative freedom.

A Journey through Post-War Paris and New York

After 1945, art required a new language. Artists no longer sought to paint landscapes or figures; they wanted to depict the unconscious, rage, and hope through staining, dripping, and texture. This exhibition transports us to that vibrant moment when Paris and New York vied for the crown of modernity.

What to expect from this exhibition:

The showcase is divided into sections exploring how painting became a physical, almost performative act:

  • Transatlantic Exchanges: witness the mark of giants such as Jackson Pollock and his revolutionary dripping technique, which changed art history forever.
  • Black is a Colour: one of the most powerful and solemn sections, featuring works by Pierre Soulages and the Spanish master Antonio Saura, proving that black and white can express the full weight of the world.
  • East meets West: discover how Oriental calligraphy influenced European artists, creating a fascinating synthesis between Far Eastern landscape traditions and Abstract Expressionism.

Why you cannot miss this event

This is far from a conventional exhibition; it is a raw encounter with post-war energy. In "Gesture and Matter", the canvas ceases to be a window and becomes a battlefield where Pollock, Soulages, and Saura projected their deepest emotions. The event celebrates the freedom of the stroke and the density of the materials, allowing you to see first-hand how painting transforms into something almost sculptural. It is a unique opportunity in Málaga to connect with the precise moment art broke its chains and chose to speak through instinct and texture.

-Top Tip: stand before the large-scale works to truly appreciate the relief of the textures and the vigour of the brushwork; the gallery lighting is designed to make you feel the vibration of every stroke as if the artist had only just left the studio.Visiting Information:Dates: 13 May to 7 September 2026.Location: Pasaje de la Farola, s/n.
