The connection map at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) continues to expand its horizons towards markets of exceptional strategic value. The biggest news of the season is the official confirmation of a new direct route between Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (RUH) and the Malaga province, operated by Saudi Arabia’s new full-service airline, Riyadh Air.
This connection not only strengthens international accessibility to Andalusia but also redefines high-level tourism flows across Southern Europe.
The airline has structured this route as a seasonal service, concentrating its entire operation during the peak summer holiday months. The logistical details confirmed by Preferente are as follows:
Ticket sales are now fully open through the company’s channels and specialised agencies, also allowing passengers to enrol as founding members in their loyalty programme, Sfeer.
The commercial launch of this direct flight responds to the demand for exclusive leisure routes highly sought after by the Persian Gulf traveller profile. Historically, the Costa del Sol (and most notably destinations like Marbella and Benahavís) has been a magnet for Middle Eastern visitors seeking extended stays, premium services and high-end, customised experiences.
With this direct Riyadh Air route, the need for layovers at other European or domestic hubs is eliminated. This directly captures a market with high spending power in key sectors such as five-star hospitality, bespoke, luxury real estate, signature dining and bespoke tourist experiences within the region’s interior.
For residents and travellers on the Costa del Sol, the benefit is mutual. Passengers boarding at the Malaga terminal not only gain direct access to the Saudi capital but can also use the Riyadh hub to seamlessly connect with a rapidly expanding global network of destinations, including prominent cities such as Jeddah, Dubai, Cairo or Kuala Lumpur.
This route integrates perfectly into the expansion plans of Riyadh Air, a company backed by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund (Public Investment Fund) which aims to position Riyadh as one of the most influential international transport hubs of the decade.
If you plan to take advantage of these new international links this summer, forward planning is essential. As we previously highlighted in our analysis of New Routes and Connections in Malaga, passenger volumes at the terminals continue to reach historic highs.
Remember to account for the extra time required due to the phased rollout of the new digital biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) at border control for passengers holding non-EU passports (such as British travellers), ensuring a smooth departure and entry into the country without any unexpected delays.
