Making Axarquía’s history even more accessible: over one hundred panels reveal the secrets of the Andalusi Legacy

There is an Andalusia that cannot be seen at first glance—one that hides within the labyrinthine streets of its whitewashed villages, the whisper of its irrigation channels (acequias), and the aroma of its hillside vineyards. The Axarquía region in Málaga is arguably one of the territories where the footprint of Al-Andalus has been preserved in its purest form. Now, thanks to an ambitious cultural initiative, journeying through this land is set to become an authentic trip back in time.

The Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol Axarquía has just delivered over a hundred informational panels to local town halls, designed to signpost and showcase their primary Andalusi tourism resources. This key venture falls under the national "Experiencia Andalusí" network and promises to transform the way we experience inland tourism this summer.

The Awakening of a Millenary Route

The initiative, unveiled this May, represents an unprecedented rollout for cultural tourism in the province. In total, 101 informational totems and panels have been distributed to be strategically installed across squares, viewpoints, and historical monuments throughout the Axarquía municipalities.

This project is far from an isolated action. Funded by European Next Generation EU grants via the State Secretariat for Tourism, Axarquía establishes itself as one of the cornerstones of the national "Experiencia Andalusí" project. The goal is clear: to build a cohesive tourism network that allows both domestic and international travellers to discover the tangible and intangible heritage inherited from an era of cultural, scientific, and architectural splendour.

What secrets will these panels reveal?

Until now, many travellers wandered through villages such as Comares, Frigiliana, Árchez, or Sedella, marvelled by their beauty but unaware of the fascinating chronicles embedded in their stones. The new interactive panels will break down that barrier, offering detailed insights across three fundamental areas:

  • Architecture & Urbanism: explaining the engineering behind the characteristic Mudejar minarets (such as the one in Árchez), ancient defensive fortresses, and the layout of narrow, dead-end streets originally designed to maintain coolness and family privacy.
  • Water Culture: Al-Andalus revolutionised agriculture. The new signposting will rescue the history of sophisticated irrigation systems, channels, and fountains that continue to breathe life into the region’s crops today.
  • Gastronomy & Tradition: from the cultivation of the Muscatel raisin to traditional winemaking and the use of spices, the totems will connect visitors with flavours that have endured on Andalusian tables for over five hundred years.

Digital, accessible, and sustainable tourism

True to the modern spirit, this signage goes beyond static text. Each panel incorporates interactive QR codes that instantly redirect users to the official Experiencia Andalusí portal.
